Ozone is a compound consisting of three atoms of oxygen. It’s a naturally occurring substance that has no toxicity or side effects. The fresh clean smell after a thunder/lightening storm is ozone!
Ozone was first used in Sweden in the 1920s and now ozone therapy is used worldwide for sterilizing water for medical operations and disinfecting medical and operating equipment .It is also used in many water treatment plants worldwide including water treatment plants in Los Angeles, CA. Ozone has also reached dentistry. Holistic dentists are now using it to disinfect teeth during procedures.
Ozone is made up of three oxygen molecules. It is very unstable because the third molecule wants to bind to something. This makes it a very powerful oxidizer. When the third molecule binds to the surface of a bacterial cell, parasite, protozoa, or virus it denatures the cell structure and kills it. Ozone does not do this to our healthy cells because our cells have antioxidants in their lining.
The biggest issue for medical and dental practices is infection control. When working with bodily fluids, we are always trying to find the best way to keep our patients safe and the most efficient ways to disinfect. With ozone it not only is a cost effective option, but it is the safest and easiest way to effectively keep the water lines clear of pathogens. Other products being used are either harsh chemicals or are ineffective and getting the source of contamination. With ozone we know our patients are safe and so are we.
Ozone is also used in other holistic practices to disinfect surfaces, desensitize teeth, treat cavities, and treat gum disease.
